Pongal is a popular traditional South Indian breakfast food which made from rice with moong dal. Pongal is made as ven pongal (plain pongal) or Sarkarai pongal (sweet Pongal). Pongal usually served with medu vada and coconut chutney.This is a plain Pongal recipe.
Raw rice – 1kg
Moong dal – 250 gm
Cashewnuts – ½ cup
Peppercorns – 8
Milk – ½ cup
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – 5
green chillies – 5, chopped small pieces
Ghee – 100 gm
Salt – to taste
Heat 1 tsp ghee in a deep pan. Add cumin and mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chillies, peppercorn and cashewnuts.
Add rice and dal and stir for 5 minutes. Add milk and 3 cups of hot water then add salt to taste.
Cover and cook on low flame till the rice is fluffy cooked and soft.
Same ingredients can be used ot prepare Kichidi, served with minced meat and pappad.
